HDFC Life has recently been awarded the 'Most Socially Responsible Insurer' for Rebuilding Uttarakhand project at the Indian Insurance Awards, 2014.
In June 2013, a multi-day cloudburst resulting in devastating floods & landslides struck the state of Uttarakhand. As per the official estimates, more than 5,700 died while thousand others were displaced in the disaster. For people of Uttarakhand, life was irreversibly altered.
As a responsible corporate, HDFC Life decided to support people affected by Uttarakhand floods. The company requested its employees to pledge their one day salary for supporting rehabilitation in Uttarakhand. Our employees responded overwhelmingly to this call & a substantial amount was raised for rehabilitation of people in Uttarakhand. The company matched the amount raised by the employees.
As a company we decided that we would help in intermediate to long term rehabilitation of affected population, which is critical but mostly neglected. This stage of rehabilitation primarily involves infrastructure and livelihood restoration. After thorough due diligence, Swabhimaan identified “Habitat for Humanity India” as its implementing partner in collaboration with FICCI. Habitat for Humanity India has core competency in the area of Shelter and Housing. Habitat for Humanity India has a long term shelter intervention plan that ensures sustainable development of the communities affected by disasters. The project is supporting the affected communities with the incremental shelter solutions. Under the project 75 transitional shelter to address immediate needs & 50 permanent houses are being constructed at the project cost of Rs.2.25crore. The project will rehabilitate total of 125 families.
The project progress is being monitored through regular reporting from implementing partner & project site visits. As on 31st March, 2014, 60 transitional shelters have been completed & handed over to displaced families.

To ensure long term sustenance and rehabilitation, we are providing shelters to families who were rendered homeless by the floods.
