On 12th September, 2014, HDFC Life announced the undertaking of a flood rehabilitation project in Uttarakhand in association with Habitat for Humanity India and FICCI. The project was undertaken in order to provide shelters and permanent houses to the people of Uttarakhand affected by the devastating floods of June 2013. We consider this project as our utmost responsibility towards our fellow citizens whose lives were devastated by the catastrophic floods. To ensure long term sustenance and rehabilitation, we are providing shelters to families who were rendered homeless by the floods. We believe that a roof over the head not only provides safety but also helps a family lead a dignified life.
The project was funded by private donations from HDFC Life employees and a matching amount donated by the company. Under this project we have been able to rehabilitate a total of 125 families. 75 transitional sheltersto address immediate requirements – and 50 permanent homeshave been constructed for the flood-affected people of Uttarakhand.
These houses have been constructed with tin (GI) sheets and have iron/aluminum frames as the structure. Community members have been given orientation on the Transitional house construction process and with the help of a few skilled personnelthe families have beenable to build their homes. The function of these Transitional houses is to provide a safe and secure living space and help families work towards a more permanent housing solution.
With the completion of the permanent homes, the project will be completed in December this year.
