The mid-day meal program seeks to address issues of food security, lack of nutrition and most importantly, access to education to children in rural India. The program doesn’t end with cooking the food; it also needs to be distributed to different schools across districts in India.
One August 1, 2013, HDFC Life extended support to the Akshaya Patra Foundation, a registered trust that supports underprivileged children and facilitates education by donating a food distribution vehicle under its corporate social responsibility initiative, Swabhimaan.
Currently, Akshaya Patra Foundation serves mid-day meals to more than 456 schools that cover over 65000 children across 11 mandals of Medak district in Andhra Pradesh, the area where the project was initiated. This project mainly aims to support and bring more underprivileged children to schools for education in Medak district.
“At HDFC Life, we believe that an educated young population is the key to the development of the country,” said Mr Amitabh Chaudhry, MD & CEO of HDFC Life, adding, “HDFC Life not only insures life through its business, but also invests in child education projects that ensure a better future for the children from marginalized communities. Supporting Akshaya Patra mid-day meal program is a small step towards creating an enabling environment in our schools for children to learn as hunger and learning cannot exist together.”
Mr Sudhin Roy Chowdhury, Member Life, IRDA, who was the chief guest at the event said, “I am extremely pleased to be part of this initiative taken by HDFC Life and Akshay Patra as it contributes significantly to the growth and development of the underprivileged children of the country. I look forward to more such initiatives by HDFC Life.”
Sri H G Lakshmi Kanta Dasa of Akshaya Patra said, “HDFC Life’s support shall go a long way in realising the dream of the foundation to achieve 5 million children feeding by 2020.”
We at HDFC Life along with Akshaya Patra strongly believe that it is our social responsibility to ensure that children are not deprived of education because of hunger.
